Annual CO₂ peak reaches 432 parts per million, marking another milestone in the steady rise of greenhouse gas concentrations in Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels measured at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory reached 432.0 parts per million (ppm) in May 2026, up from 430.2 ppm in May 2025. NOAA’s independent measurements recorded an average of 432.3 ppm, confirming the upward trend.

The latest readings extend a record-breaking pattern that climate scientists have tracked for nearly seven decades and underscore the growing challenge of limiting global warming.
