The air quality in Byrnihat, a tiny industrial town on the border between Assam and Meghalaya, is so bad that in March 2025, Sumaiya Ansari, then two years old, was admitted to the hospital because she was having trouble breathing and needed oxygen support. Byrnihat’s yearly average PM2.5 concentration was an astounding 128.2 microgrammes per cubic meter, more than 25 times the WHO‘s recommended limit of 5 µg/m³, making it the most polluted urban region in the world according to IQAir’s 2024 World Air Quality Report. PM2.5, or tiny particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns, enters the lungs deeply and can lead to cancer, heart problems, and respiratory ailments. In light of the region’s abundant natural beauty, this air pollution surge in Byrnihat has made daily living difficult for locals, underscoring the urgent need for action.
A Public Health Nightmare
Air pollution surge in Byrnihat has disastrous effects on health. Abdul Halim, Sumaiya’s father, said that her breathing was “like a fish,” a horrifying experience that is indicative of the town’s larger health crisis. According to government data, respiratory illness cases in the area increased from 2,082 in 2022 to 3,681 in 2024. According to Dr. J Marak of Byrnihat Primary Healthcare Centre, respiratory problems or coughs affect 90% of daily patients. In addition to respiratory issues, locals deal with crop damage, eye discomfort, and skin rashes. “Everything is covered with dust or soot,” complains farmer Dildar Hussain, making everyday chores like drying laundry outside impossible. These circumstances highlight how pollution has degraded the standard of living in a community that was before renowned for its unspoiled surroundings.
The underlying factors are evident: Byrnihat is home to over 80 industries, many of which are categorized as the “red category” due to their significant potential for pollution. These industries include the manufacturing of coke, steel, and cement. Unpaved roads and heavy vehicle emissions exacerbate the issue by kicking up dust that contains PM2.5 and PM10 particles. According to Arup Kumar Misra, chairman of the Assam Pollution Control Board, the town’s bowl-shaped topography collects pollutants. It prevents their distribution since it is “sandwiched between the hilly terrain of Meghalaya and the plains of Assam.” Byrnihat’s air is dangerous all year round, which increases the impact on public health compared to other Indian locations where pollution peaks in the winter.

Seeking Solutions Amid Challenges
The situation in Byrnihat indicates a larger pattern in which unbridled industrialization undermines environmental protections in India’s smaller towns. According to critics, rapid industrial growth and lax regulatory supervision have made areas like Byrnihat hotspots for pollution. Solutions are made more difficult by the town’s location on the border between Assam and Meghalaya, where both states have historically shared culpability. But with IQAir’s March 2025 report, there was hope, and Assam and Meghalaya formed a joint committee to address the situation. Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, has demanded tougher enforcement, which includes shutting down businesses that don’t follow the rules.
Local initiatives are accelerating. Residents demonstrated pollution control measures in January 2025, and seven industrial facilities were closed for infractions. Although there are still issues, such as insufficient monitoring and enforcement capabilities, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board is conducting surprise inspections. Public health must be prioritized, pollutants must be controlled, and infrastructure must be upgraded to address Byrnihat’s predicament. The joint committee’s efforts must result in real change to bring clean air back to this struggling community while Sumaiya and thousands of others endure.
