WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Saima Wazed highlighted on the eve of the International Day of Yoga that yoga can drive global sustainability efforts by urging people to live simply, practice mindful consumption, and appreciate nature. By practicing yoga, people may lessen their ecological footprint and help create a healthier planet, she said.

Yoga Can Drive Global Sustainability Efforts

According to Wazed, the International Day of Yoga, celebrated annually on June 21st, honors a timeless discipline that benefits both body and spirit. The celebration reminds us of the strong connection between human well-being and the planet’s health. This year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” reinforces that link.

She added that yoga is a physical activity and a journey toward inner peace and harmony. It teaches individuals to be mindful and attentive to their bodies. Regular practice makes people more aware of their surroundings and more attuned to nature’s rhythm.

International Recognition and Origins of Yoga Day

Wazed noted that in 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the International Day of Yoga at the UN General Assembly. Due to its global significance, he suggested June 21, the summer solstice, as a symbolic date. The resolution received wide support, with 177 UN member nations co-sponsoring it.

According to Wazed, the first celebration occurred in 2015, marking the beginning of an international wellness movement that continues to expand. She said the initiative reflects yoga’s universal appeal and ability to unite people to pursue healthier, more sustainable living.

She emphasized that yoga protects clean air, pure water, and fertile soil, all essential resources for human well-being, and supports efforts to preserve these for future generations. In this way, yoga can drive global sustainability efforts by fostering awareness and responsibility toward environmental health.

Wazed said the benefits of yoga are well-documented. She cited research showing that 77% of respondents reported feeling physically stronger with regular practice. Additionally, 82% of patients with chronic inflammation saw nearly a 50% reduction after six weeks of daily yoga.

She also mentioned the positive effects on mental health. According to a Harvard Medical School study, 60% of individuals with depression experienced significant symptom improvement after practicing yoga twice a week for eight weeks.
