World Water Week 2025 is an important international forum for tackling the interconnected challenges of sustainability, climate change, and water. It will take place online and in Stockholm, Sweden, from August 24 to 28. The 35th edition, which has been organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) since 1991, has as its topic “Water for Climate Action,” highlighting the prime role that water plays in reducing climate change and fostering resilient ecosystems and communities.

With more than 15,000 attendees from a variety of industries, the event highlights creative solutions for a sustainable future while encouraging cooperation between activists, researchers, and policymakers to address urgent water issues, such as transboundary cooperation and urban governance.

Addressing Water as a Climate Solution

Water is both a victim of climate change and a key component of adaptation and mitigation, as highlighted by the World Water Week 2025 theme, “Water for Climate Action.” To address problems including melting glaciers, increasing sea levels, and unpredictable rainfall patterns, sessions will examine inclusive governance, climate-smart infrastructure, and nature-based solutions. For example, conversations will focus on urban water crises in places like Flint, São Paulo, and Mumbai, where vulnerabilities are made worse by shortages, contamination, and infrastructure failures.

Oxfam will advocate for rights-based solutions and climate justice for underprivileged populations while addressing water insecurity in conflict areas like Gaza and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The event will also highlight funding collaborations to close access gaps to water and sanitation, which is a significant topic of UN-Water’s August 28 session.

Fostering Global Cooperation and Innovation

World Water Week 2025 will act as a platform for interdisciplinary discussion, bringing together specialists to create practical approaches to water security. Ahead of the UN Water Conference in 2026, sessions like “Tracking Outcomes of Global Climate and Water Conferences” will assess previous commitments and influence future policies. A significant focus will be on transboundary water cooperation, which is mandatory for shared ecosystems.

The Namami Gange initiative in India demonstrates scalable river rejuvenation approaches. Research on sustainable water practices will be shared by new open-access publications like Clean Oceans and Aquaculture Science and Management, highlighting the event’s dedication to innovation. The conference seeks to make water management a force for social justice and ecological resilience by bringing together stakeholders from different continents.
