Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is rapidly rising in the atmosphere, and much of it can be traced back to the way we eat and manage waste. Tackling this issue is no simple task, but with the right interventions, we can make significant strides in reducing emissions. The latest findings from the Global Carbon Project highlight both the scale of the problem and the opportunity we have to address it.

The Growing Methane Challenge

According to the new Global Methane Budget report, global methane emissions rose faster than ever in the three years ending in 2022. The report, which tracks sources and sinks of methane, found that two-thirds of methane emissions in 2020 were caused by human activity, with the rest from natural sources like wetlands.

Agriculture and waste management are the primary human-driven emitters, responsible for nearly twice the methane emissions compared to the fossil fuel sector. This gap is especially concerning, given that methane is much more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere over short periods — about 80 times more powerful in the first 20 years.

Why Food’s Methane Emissions Deserve Urgent Attention

What’s alarming is that this rise in methane emissions is occurring despite global commitments. More than 155 countries have pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030. The work ahead is daunting, but it is crucial if we are to meet these targets. While the problem is vast, the majority of emissions come from human activities, and that means we have the power to reverse this trend.

Agriculture: A Key Player in Methane Emissions

Agriculture represents a significant part of the methane challenge. It occupies just under half of the planet’s habitable land, with livestock farming and rice production being the biggest emitters within this sector. Livestock, particularly ruminants like cattle and sheep, produce methane through enteric fermentation, which occurs during digestion. Manure management and rice paddies, which are often flooded, also contribute significantly to methane emissions.

Cutting back on meat consumption, especially red meat in high-income countries, is one of the most effective ways to reduce methane emissions. Shifting toward plant-based diets could have a massive impact, both for the environment and human health. However, this is easier said than done. Dietary habits are deeply ingrained, and systemic changes are needed to encourage consumers to adopt plant-based options.

In addition to dietary shifts, there are emerging technological solutions targeting enteric fermentation, such as feed additives like seaweed, which have shown promise in reducing methane production in cattle. Manure management practices that separate liquids from solids and reduce methane emissions from waste offer another avenue for mitigating agricultural emissions.

Rice production, particularly in regions where it is a staple, also requires innovative solutions. Alternatives to traditional flooding methods, such as intermittent flooding or alternate wetting and drying, can help lower emissions. These methods not only cut methane production but also conserve water, offering dual environmental benefits.

The Role of Food Waste and Landfills

Food waste, both at the consumer and retail levels, is another major contributor to methane emissions. When organic waste decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, a process that is largely avoidable with proper waste management. In 2020, nearly a fifth of global methane emissions came from waste, with food waste playing a substantial role. For example, in the United States, 58 per cent of methane emissions from landfills are attributed to food waste.

Addressing food waste can have a significant impact on methane emissions, and some countries have already made progress in this area. South Korea has virtually eliminated food waste in landfills by banning organic waste. France has also enacted a ban on grocery stores throwing away unsold food, leading to a decrease in waste. These policies are examples of what can be achieved with political will and public cooperation.

However, the Global South continues to struggle with waste management. Scaling successful waste management practices to these regions will be key in the global effort to reduce methane emissions. As Emily Broad Leib from Harvard’s Food Law and Policy Clinic notes, there is a growing awareness of the need to divert food waste from landfills, but the solutions must be adaptable to different socio-economic and environmental contexts.

The Opportunity in Methane Reduction

Methane’s short lifespan in the atmosphere, which is around 20 years, presents a unique opportunity. While carbon dioxide persists for centuries, methane breaks down relatively quickly, meaning that any reductions in methane emissions will have an immediate effect on curbing global warming. This is why governments are particularly interested in methane reduction strategies, as it offers a way to buy time while we transition away from fossil fuels.

The agricultural sector, however, poses a more complex challenge than energy. The energy sector’s path to decarbonization is clear: shift from fossil fuels to renewables. For consumers, this transition happens mostly in the background. With agriculture, though, change will require behavioural shifts from consumers and technological adoption by farmers.

For example, as Mario Herrero from Cornell University notes, only 20 per cent of livestock farmers have adopted novel technologies to reduce methane emissions over the last 15 years, indicating that widespread adoption of methane-reducing strategies will require significant policy incentives and support.

Systems Change Starts with Us

As daunting as the challenge may be, food is a topic that resonates with everyone. We all make decisions about it several times a day, which means we have the power to drive change at the consumer level. Shifting our dietary habits and reducing food waste are immediate steps we can take. However, to make a difference on a global scale, systemic change is needed.

Policies that encourage plant-based diets reduce food waste, and promote sustainable farming practices are essential. As Broad Leib says, there is a playbook emerging for how to address food waste, and we need to roll these solutions out more quickly.

The problem of methane emissions is indeed massive, but it is not insurmountable. With the right combination of consumer choices, technological innovations, and policy interventions, we can make significant strides in reducing methane emissions and slowing the pace of climate change. In the words of James Gerber from Project Drawdown, “If we’re a big part of the problem, we can be a big part of the solution.”

The future of our planet may well depend on it.
