In a study grounded in an innovative 30-year follow-up, published in Marine Biology (Lapointe et al., 2019), the water chemistry and coral health in the lower Florida Keys were monitored at Looe Key from 1984 to 2014. The scientists found out that the coral cover had reduced to less than 6 percent in 2008, as compared to an estimated 33 percent in 1984. This collapse was caused not only by heat, but by a constant rise in nitrogen pollution as well.
