The renowned Joshua tree plant has grabbed the imaginations of those who have encountered it. Though originally described as “the most repulsive tree in the vegetable kingdom,” its distinct look attracts thousands of tourists to Joshua Tree National Park each year and has even inspired many artists. However, it is currently under growing strain from climate change.
How Did the Joshua Tree Get Its Name?

According to legends, a party of Mormon pioneers travelled through the Mojave desert in the mid-nineteenth century when they discovered the Tree. The outstretched arms of this California desert plant prompted them to a biblical story in which Joshua extended his hands to guide the Israelites across Canaan. Similarly, the Tree helped the Mormons across the United States desert, hence the name.

What is so Special About the Joshua Tree?
Here are three reasons why the Joshua tree is unique in itself:
1. It Can Clone Itself!
One of the most remarkable features of the Tree is its unique root structure.
As a monocot, the Tree possesses fibrous roots. The plant’s slender roots extend from its base in a radial arrangement. A typical tree plant has hundreds of roots, resulting in a root system so dense that surrounding plants rarely survive. In the arid desert, some roots penetrate as deep underground as 10-30 feet (3-9 metres) in quest of water. Other roots grow laterally, measuring only 1-6 inches (2.5-15 cm) deep.
These roots, known as rhizomes, create new shoots genetically similar to the parent tree. The ability to clone itself can provide an evolutionary advantage, allowing a tree population to recover more quickly after disasters such as floods or fires. In certain regions, trees appear to reproduce mostly through cloning. They rely on wind or small animals to devour their fruit and disseminate its seeds around the desert.
2. The Joshua Tree and Moths: A Symbiotic Relationship
Trees share a unique co-evolutionary relationship with the Yucca Moth (the Pronuba Moth). The Tree relies solely on the yucca moth for pollination. It is the only bug that can pollinate Joshua trees.
The yucca moths (technically, two distinct species of yucca moth are there, Tegeticula synthetica and T. antithetica, that pollinate the two varieties of Tree) lay their eggs in the ovary of the tree flower and collect pollen with a pair of long, coiled “tentacles“. They then deposit the pollen in other flowers, causing pollination.
But it is a two-way street. The Tree is also necessary for the insects’ survival! When the moth’s eggs hatch into larvae, the ravenous larvae eat the tree seeds. Without the Tree, the moths could not produce caterpillars. Without the moths, the trees could not generate seeds. It’s that simple.
3. Significance of Joshua Trees in Indigenous Cultures
One of the most fascinating facts about the Tree is its traditional relevance to the area’s Indigenous tribes.
The Serrano, Cahuilla, Mojave, and Chemehuevi Indigenous people occupied and used the region now Joshua Tree National Park before Europeans arrived in 1769. In the Cahuilla language, the Tree is called hunuvat chiy’a or humwichawa.
These Indigenous people employed the Tree for various uses, including weaving baskets and sandals from its tough leaves and consuming flower buds and seeds (raw or roasted) as part of their conventional diet.
The Tree’s limbs may also be cut, the contents scraped out, and the remaining hollow limb used as a canister to transport nuts and berries. The tree’s scarlet rootlets were also used to make a natural dye for their woven baskets.

Joshua Tree: Climate Change Putting Strain on California’s Iconic Plant
One of the most recognisable desert plants, it grows mostly in the Mojave Desert, a southwestern corner of North America that spans Arizona, southern California, Nevada, and Utah in the United States, as well as the northeastern tip of Mexico. Though they are most common here, tree plants can also be observed in the Sonoran Desert and the San Bernardino Mountains. They favour more significant elevation and cooler climates like those in the Mojave Desert.
However, rising temperatures, increased drought, and groundwater depletion are all taking their toll. According to a recent study, unchecked climate change with business-as-usual greenhouse gas emissions would limit the Tree’s habitat to just 0.02% of its current range by 2070-2099. This expected loss is even more concerning given the changes that the plant has successfully survived over millennia. These trees are around 2.5 million years old as a species and have undergone numerous climatic shifts during their lifetime.
