Early-stage sustainability-focused businesses have had a major economic and environmental impact, according to the World Economic Forum’s UpLink project. The UpLink Annual Impact Report 2025 states that during 2023–2024, the WEF initiative cuts over 140000 tonnes of carbon emissions, the same as over 30,000 automobiles’ worth of emissions annually. Additionally, 140 million hectares of terrestrial and aquatic areas—nearly one-fifth the size of the Amazon rainforest—were protected and actively managed thanks to UpLink-supported start-ups.

Tracking 28 million tonnes of garbage and purifying 2.5 billion liters of toxic wastewater are two more noteworthy environmental accomplishments. Indra Water in India processed 1.2 billion litres of wastewater in 2024, increasing its capacity by 243% from 2022. Aiming to save 100 billion litres of water by 2027, SHAYP‘s anomaly detection system conserved 7 billion litres of water in 2024.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

UpLink’s contribution to economic growth is highlighted in the report, as it created over 19,000 new jobs between 2023 and 2024—a 68% increase from the year before. The income of nearly 500,000 smallholder farmers and fishermen increased, and 18,000 waste collectors were given access to official markets, which helped with waste reduction initiatives.

Access to vital services was also enhanced via UpLink-supported startups. Improved sanitation, hygiene, and water solutions helped 2.7 million people in 2024 and helped lower the health hazards related to contaminated water.

Innovations and Investment Growth

A number of startups were commended for their creative input. EnviCore, a Canadian company, decreased carbon emissions in the construction sector by using waste materials from mining activities. 6.7 million hectares of forests and natural reserves in Brazil were monitored for wildfire threats in 2024 by Umgrauemeio using AI-powered satellite images.

With $633 million raised in 2024—a $196 million increase from the year before—investment in UpLink-supported ventures increased significantly. The consumer base grew by more than 40% in almost half of these endeavours.

Along with supporting transparent and circular value chains, UpLink also provided funding to 13 start-ups through the Traceability for Circularity Challenge. Compared to 2023, GreenPlat Data Management detected and traced 12.3 million more tons of garbage in 2024, while S4S Technologies cut 60,000 tonnes of food waste. The WEF initiative cuts over 140000 tonnes of carbon emissions, enough to feed 2.7 million people for a month with the food waste saved.

UpLink anticipates increasing its backing for carbon capture, sustainable mining, and AI-powered environmental monitoring in the future to have an even greater influence.
