One major issue is low recycling rates; fewer than 9% of plastics worldwide are recycled. Many plastics cannot be recycled because they consist of too many complex material blends or are contaminated.
Moreover, bioplastics touted as eco-friendly usually tend to fail and not degrade in regular conditions. Recently, a study established that 60% of these products do not completely break down, thereby remaining pollutants. For these options to work, significant improvements have to be made in recycling technology and consumer awareness.

Countries like Germany have adopted the system of deposit refunds; these models have helped reach the levels of recycling for plastic bottles to up to 97.6%.

Moving towards the circular economy will ensure plastics are reused, repaired, or recycled and not discarded. Refill stations for day-to-day items and zero-waste packaging systems are becoming popular. Laws that hold producers liable for plastic waste also encourage businesses to develop sustainable designs and reduce packaging.
D. Biodegradable and Compostable Plastics
Developing truly biodegradable and compostable plastics is a promising solution to mitigate plastic pollution. Unlike traditional plastics, biodegradable variants break down into natural substances such as water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter under specific environmental conditions. While home-compostable plastics have faced criticism for failing to fully decompose in typical settings, their design advancements could improve outcomes.
For example, countries like Japan invest in research to come up with bio-based plastics derived from renewable resources, such as algae and agricultural waste. Properly labeling products to consumers and educating them about waste management will ensure that these products reach the proper waste streams to benefit the environment as much as possible.
E. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programs
Under an EPR program, the manufacturers are held responsible for all of their product’s lifecycle, including post-consumer waste. For example, in California, laws mandate that the producers ensure their packaging is recyclable or reusable. Policies such as these promote innovations in product design and generate finance for waste management systems through a more sustainable production model.
These efforts can include tying in existing waste and recycling strategies to fast-track the reduction of plastic pollution. There are also inherent aspects of the need for systemic change through policy, innovation, and consumer action.
