According to the new United Nations environmental evaluation, one of the major reasons behind the decline of urban air quality is the rise in urban tropospheric ozone pollution in cities all over the globe. The Global Environment Outlook‑7 (GEO‑7) report draws attention to the fact that a warmer climate is the main factor, as it speeds up the chemical reactions forming ozone in the lower atmosphere – a result combining less and less greenhouse gases from forest fires, longer pollen seasons, and rising temperatures. Those changes, in return, are creating higher health risks and more environmental mistakes, especially in highly populated urban areas.
What the UN Report Found
The GEO‑7 report published by the United Nations Environment Programme demonstrates that tropospheric ozone (O₃) – the major reason for smog – has surged noticeably in numerous cities of South America, Africa, Western Europe, and South and Southeast Asia during the years 2000-2019.
Within these years, population‑weighted ozone levels increased by more than 24% in these urban areas, which means more and more citizens were exposed to dangerous air pollution, and exacerbated respiratory diseases took place in those regions.
Ozone near the earth is not something that comes out directly but is instead the product of chemical interplay involving nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with the help of sunlight. Higher temperatures facilitate these processes, which in turn result in the more frequent occurrence of local ozone and worsening urban air pollution.

Health and Environmental Impacts
The inhalation of elevated tropospheric ozone may result in the development of health disorders and cause the existing problems to become worse; for instance, sensitized asthma, decreased lung function, and sudden death are among such disorders.
On top of that, the United Nations data show that half a million individuals who have died prematurely worldwide during the time of the research are attributed to ozone exposure, with death rates rising by 46% between 2000 and 2019. Furthermore, ozone is capable of inflicting harm on the plant kingdom, lowering crop yields, destroying ecosystems, and even endangering food security.

Shifting Drivers and Policy Challenges
At the same time, some regions have been able to cut emissions of traditional air pollutants like NO₂, but baseline ozone levels keep increasing because of factors such as rising methane concentrations, which are responsible for approximately 35% of the global ozone burden, and ongoing climate warming.
