Fifty-five workers were buried under deep snow after an avalanche slammed a Border Roads Organization (BRO) camp close to Mana village in the Badrinath district of Uttarakhand on February 28, 2025. The Uttarakhand Badrinath Avalanche has prompted large-scale rescue efforts. To find and free the stranded people, rescue teams from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been operating in harsh conditions.

Uttarakhand Badrinath Avalanche

As of  March 1, four workers are dead, five workers are still unaccounted for, and 50 people have been successfully rescued. Teams find it challenging to access certain places due to the operation’s challenges, which include severe snowfall and the possibility of more avalanches. Some of the rescued people are in critical condition, but officials have confirmed that they are receiving medical attention.

Sniffer dogs and thermal imaging have been used in the search for survivors. Additionally, helicopters are being used to evacuate injured people to Joshimath hospitals. Authorities are optimistic that they can find the remaining stranded workers despite the bitterly cold temperatures and difficult terrain.

Government Response and Support

The state of Uttarakhand, along with central authorities, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has been keeping a careful eye on the situation. According to him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised complete support for the rescue efforts and maintains frequent communication with state officials.

The state administration established a makeshift control room in Joshimath to coordinate the operation. Helpline numbers have been provided to aid the families of the stranded workers, the majority of whom are from other states. Additionally, the administration has made sure that plans are underway for rehabilitation and relief for individuals affected.

Concern over the situation has also been voiced by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who has stated that every effort is being made to preserve lives. Additional resources, such as specialized rescue teams trained for high-altitude missions, have been dispatched by the Ministry of Defence.

Search Continues for Missing Workers

Despite the tireless efforts of rescue personnel, eight workers are still buried beneath the snow. Although operations have been temporarily halted due to the unpredictable weather, authorities are committed to continuing until all missing persons are located.

The Uttarakhand Badrinath Avalanche has raised concerns about safety measures in high-altitude construction zones, prompting discussions about improving early warning systems and preparedness for such disasters.

Critically injured workers are being evacuated for advanced medical treatment as part of the start of helicopter evacuations. Additional snowfall might make continuing operations more difficult, so officials are advising caution and readiness in the area.

Authorities are still dedicated to rescuing all stranded personnel, but the situation remains critical.
