Uttar Pradesh was hit by a deadly storm and rain on Wednesday evening, leaving at least 117 people dead across multiple districts. The severe weather brought heavy rain, dust storms, strong winds, thunder and lightning, uprooting trees, damaging houses, disrupting road traffic, and cutting electricity and communication networks in several areas.

The death toll rose sharply overnight from earlier reports of 89 deaths to 117, as district officials continued collecting casualty figures and assessing damage. Relief and restoration teams remain deployed in the worst-hit areas, while officials warned that the numbers could change as assessments continue.

Prayagraj Among Worst-Hit Areas

Prayagraj reported the highest number of fatalities, with 23 deaths after severe dust storms and strong winds lashed several parts of the district. Officials said deaths were reported from Handia, Phulpur, Soraon, and Meja, while several large trees were uprooted across Patthar Girjaghar, Ashok Nagar, Kachahari Road, Mahatma Gandhi Marg, and Kalyani Devi.

The storm also disrupted the electricity supply in several localities and blocked roads. Municipal teams began clearing fallen trees to restore traffic movement. The Triveni Sangam area also suffered damage, with huts used by pilgrimage priests uprooted and collapsed.

Major Damage Reported Across UP

  • Houses and huts damaged: Strong winds damaged homes, mud walls, tin sheds and temporary structures in several districts.
  • Trees uprooted: Large trees collapsed on roads, houses and vehicles, causing deaths, injuries and traffic disruption.
  • Power and communication hit: Electricity lines and mobile networks were affected, slowing rescue and coordination efforts in some areas.
  • Vehicles crushed: Falling walls and trees damaged cars, motorcycles and a truck in multiple locations.
  • Rescue work underway: Police, administrative teams, SDMs, tehsildars and district officials are carrying out inspections, relief and restoration work.

Tragic Incidents in Villages

Uttar Pradesh hit by deadly storm

In Sant Ravidas Nagar, one of the worst incidents occurred in Khargasenpur village under Suriyawan police station, where four people, including a woman and her three daughters, died after a tree fell on a house during the storm.

In Badaun, two minor girls, Mausami, 10, and Rajni, 9, died after a mud wall collapsed on them in Siddhpur Kaitholi village. In another incident, a woman named Laxmi died after a tree fell on a tubewell room where people had taken shelter. A truck driver, Yogesh, also died after a eucalyptus tree fell on his vehicle.

Government Response

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the deaths and destruction caused by the unseasonal storm and directed officials to ensure relief reaches affected families within 24 hours. He has also announced 4 lakhs in compensation for the families of the dead. Officials said rescue teams are working to restore electricity, communication lines, and road connectivity in the worst-affected districts.
