The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that US power consumption will hit record-high levels in 2025 and 2026. This surge is driven by increased demand from data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency, as well as the growing use of electricity in the heating and transportation sectors.

US power consumption will hit record-high levels in 2025 and 2026

Projected Power Consumption Growth

The latest report portrays the overall increase of power demand cast to rise to 4,179 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025 and 4,239 billion kWh in 2026, up from a record 4,082 billion kWh in 2024.

Residential areas are forecasted to reach 1,524 billion kWh of power consumption in 2025. In the commercial sector, an expected increase of 1,458 billion kWh in 2025 is assumed. Industrial zones are projected to generate 1,054 billion kWh in 2025.

Natural Gas and its share in power generation is anticipated to decline from 43% in 2024 to 40% in 2025 and 39% in 2026. The coal industry will be impacted, too. It is expected to decrease from 16% in 2024 and 2025 to 15% in 2026. Renewable sources are projected to rise from 23% in 2024 to 25% in 2025 and 27% in 2026, and lastly, nuclear energy sources are expected to maintain a steady share of 19% through 2026.

Factors Driving Increased Consumption

Data centers have been booming recently. The proliferation of data centers, especially those supporting AI and cryptocurrency operations, is a significant contributor to the rising power demand.

The electrification of heating and transportation, as an increasing number of homes and businesses are adopting electric solutions for heating and transportation, is further driving up electricity consumption.

Economic Implications and Environmental Considerations

The GDP will also be affected by the increased investments in data centers. It could boost the US GDP by 10-20 basis points in 2025-2026, driven by demands in construction, technology equipment, and power infrastructure.

The EIA forecasts that US energy-related carbon dioxide emissions will increase slightly in 2025 and decrease slightly in 2026.

The increase in 2025 will develop a larger carbon footprint than ever, with higher emissions from coal and petroleum-product consumption, while the decrease in 2026 is attributed to reduced natural gas generation and improvements in vehicle fuel economy.

The anticipated US power consumption will hit record-high levels in 2025 and 2026, underscoring the nation’s evolving energy landscape. While technological advancements and increased electrification drive demand, the shift towards renewable energy sources and the focus on environmental sustainability will play crucial roles in shaping the future of US energy consumption.
