US power and grid expansion faces labor shortage as Goldman Sachs warns that America’s energy industry could need around 500,000 additional workers by 2030 to keep up with rising electricity demand and infrastructure investment. The challenge extends beyond generating enough power: utilities, manufacturers, construction companies and grid operators also need trained workers to build and maintain the systems required to deliver it. With many roles requiring three to four years of training, the gap cannot be closed quickly.

Goldman Sachs estimates that the US power and grid value chain will require about 510,000 additional workers by 2030. Around 300,000 positions are expected across manufacturing, construction and operations, while another 207,000 would be needed in electricity transmission and distribution. The energy apprenticeship pipeline recorded only about 45,000 entrants in 2024, compared with an estimated requirement of approximately 65,000 annually.

AI and Electricity Demand Add to the Pressure

The labor shortage comes as electricity demand is rising, particularly because of data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Humanoid Robots Could Become Part of the Solution

Goldman Sachs also points to automation as one possible response if the human workforce cannot expand quickly enough.

  • The firm expects the humanoid robot market to grow from around 20,000 units in 2025 to 1.4 million by 2035, representing a dramatic expansion in deployment.
  • Companies including Tesla, Amazon and Caterpillar are already using autonomous systems in different industrial applications, while China has begun deploying robots for power-grid inspection and maintenance.
  • Such systems could eventually take on repetitive or hazardous tasks, including equipment inspection, maintenance and certain construction activities.

Robots, however, are unlikely to eliminate the need for skilled energy workers. The immediate requirement remains expanding apprenticeship programs and developing technicians, electricians, engineers and construction specialists who can build and operate increasingly complex power infrastructure.

Training May Be the Most Immediate Bottleneck

Closing the gap would require increasing annual apprenticeship participation from roughly 45,000 to 65,000, a rise of about 44%. That is particularly difficult because many energy-sector positions require years of hands-on training rather than short-term retraining.

The timing matters because the US is simultaneously expanding generation, transmission networks and data-centre capacity. If the workforce does not grow alongside that investment, projects could face longer construction schedules, higher labor costs and delays in connecting new electricity demand.

Goldman Sachs’ warning therefore puts the US energy transition in a different perspective. Building more power plants and transmission lines is only part of the challenge. The country also needs enough trained people and, increasingly, capable automation to actually build, operate and maintain them.
