On January 20th, Shanghai, a busy financial center in China, experienced snowfall, which was because of a strong cold wave that was sweeping through southern China. What made this even stranger was that just a week before, Shanghai had warm weather, with temperatures around 20 °C (68 °F), which had even caused some plants to bloom early. Snowfall in Shanghai made people both surprised and happy as snowflakes started to fall in a city where it doesn’t snow much anymore.

Scenes from the Streets: Joy and Disruption

On the streets of Shanghai, people shared photos and videos of the snow on social media, and walked around with umbrellas and wore scarves. Locals said that it felt like a special event because it had been several years since the city had seen so much snow. The last time it snowed a lot was in January 2018. Weather experts said that this cold period would last for at least three more days, meaning there would likely be more snow and ice in the area.

While many people enjoyed the snow, it also caused some problems, like roads becoming slippery early in the morning, which made it harder for people to get to work and changed travel plans. The snow on the ground, though not very deep, reminded people that long periods of cold weather have become rare in this subtropical city.

Wider Weather Impacts Across China

Shanghai wasn’t the only place that felt the cold, and the same cold front brought low temperatures and snow to other parts of southern and central China. Provinces like Jiangxi and Guizhou saw big drops in temperature, as much as 10 to 14 °C.

Because of the harsh winter conditions, officials across the country took safety precautions. China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that in 12 provinces, including Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Heilongjiang, officials closed 241 sections of major roads because of icy surfaces and dangerous driving conditions.

A Reminder of Weather Extremes

The snowfall reminded people of winters from the past and showed how much the weather can change because of climate shifts. One local resident said that the weather seemed strange this year, thinking about how warm it had been recently compared to how cold it was now.

Weather experts are watching the situation closely, and both officials and regular people are ready for any more problems caused by the cold wave. The snowfall in Shanghai has captured everyone’s attention and reminds us that unusual weather is becoming more common in the region.
