With average worldwide temperatures 2.12 degrees Fahrenheit higher than the 20th-century average, 2023 is now officially the hottest year in recorded history. This continues a worrying trend, surpassing an earlier record set in 2016. The fact that all 10 of the highest annual averages have happened in the last 10 years highlights how quickly climate change is happening. Experts warn that 2024 will likely be another record-breaking year, especially as heatwave hotspots around the globe intensify, with 2024 already having the warmest summer and single day on record.

Heatwave Hotspots and Alarming Impacts

According to a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, exceptional heatwave hotspots have emerged that are more intense than those predicted by climate models. Except for Antarctica, these areas are dispersed over every continent and show up as “giant, angry skin blotches” on a world map. Physical processes that are complicated and little understood have caused certain regions to warm at an alarmingly faster rate during the past 65 years.

Densely populated regions in Korea, China, and Japan and portions of Europe are among the most affected. Interestingly, extreme heatwaves in 2022 killed almost 60,000 people in northwest Europe. Thousands of people have died globally as a result of wildfires, extensive crop failures, and other catastrophic weather events. According to the study, these developments are partly due to jet stream instabilities brought on by the fast warming of the Arctic.

Urgent Need for Action Against Extreme Heat

With extreme heat becoming the world’s most deadly weather-related calamity, experts emphasize the critical need for more public awareness and preparedness. There is growing support for naming heat waves after hurricanes to improve public safety and responsiveness. Although humans may eventually adapt, lead author Kai Kornhuber of Columbia University‘s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory stresses that “we’re not built for them,” emphasizing the serious effects on infrastructure and health. In order to lessen the catastrophic effects of climate change, urgent action is required to address the increasing frequency and severity of these catastrophes.
