Simon Stiell, the UN Climate Chief, hailed India as a “solar superpower” that is producing outcomes while other nations only talk. Speaking at an ET Now Global Business Summit curtain-raiser event last Friday, he emphasized India’s economic expansion while lowering energy intensity, as well as its pioneering role in establishing the International Solar Alliance and setting challenging clean energy goals. He pointed out that nations spearheading the shift to sustainable energy would have substantial economic gains, and India is currently taking that path.
Call for Stronger Climate Action and Global Clean Energy Growth
Stiell noted that in order to unleash even larger benefits for its 1.4 billion people and economy, India must improve its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and move forward. He recommended that nations concentrate on utilizing renewable energy’s economic potential, raising living standards, and creating jobs rather than solely cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The UN Climate Chief praised India’s solar power and its achievements but called for a more robust embrace of the global clean energy boom to boost economic expansion. Additionally, he noted that although some countries are reversing their climate pledges, others—like India—are advancing and taking advantage of new opportunities in sustainable development and renewable energy.

Richer countries have a responsibility to provide sufficient climate funding to assist developing nations, especially with regard to climate resilience, the UN climate chief warned them.
