Lidl GB, a supermarket chain in the UK, has stated that it would use recycled ocean plastic in its water bottles. A minimum of 30% Prevented Ocean Plastic will be present starting in July in Lidl’s 1 litre San Celestino Italian Sparkling Mineral Water. They claim to be the first grocery firm to accomplish this.

Every year, the business sells roughly 12 million bottles of daily merchandise. The business anticipates that this programme will save about 100 tonnes of plastic from entering our seas each year, keeping in mind this sale. That is around 4 million disposable water bottles worth of water.

Lidl GB thinks its most recent product development would spur further industry-wide initiatives. The UK supermarket converts ocean plastic into useful bottles. This kind of plastic is produced using recycled materials from coastal regions vulnerable to ocean plastic contamination. The action coincides with the announcement that Lidl would introduce colourless lids for its milk over the next two months. The modification, made in collaboration with Müller and Cornish Farm, will increase the milk packaging’s potential to be recycled.

The first retailer in the UK to provide food packaging made from prevented ocean plastic was Lidl GB in 2020. These days, among other items, that is utilized for own-brand fresh fish, breaded chicken, sausages, and fresh fruit. According to estimates, this has prevented 15 million plastic water bottles from entering the ocean.
