The creative strategy used by Resting Reef replicates the natural oyster reefs, which have suffered an 85% global reduction due to human activities like overfishing and climate change. To produce a variety of habitats for fish and other marine species, the company uses ashes to embed reef structures that vary in height, texture, and tube networks. When these reefs are finished, they are anchored to the seafloor at a depth of about 10 meters, stopping coastal erosion, filtering water, and supporting wildlife. The promise of this strategy was shown in a 2024 pilot project in Bali, where 24 memorial reefs attracted 84 fish species and achieved fish diversity 14 times higher than adjacent damaged regions. The firm is currently attempting to obtain licenses to install these reefs at the Plymouth Breakwater to restore the British seabed and provide a significant burial option. The director of the Ships initiative in Plymouth, Peter Holt, emphasized how the initiative may increase fishing and diving tourism while advancing the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park’s goal to re-establish a connection between the public and marine life. The idea was finalized in the Terra Carta Design Lab, a competition sponsored by King Charles and designer Jony Ive, and the king’s harbour master approved it. The Forbes 30 Under 30 list for social impact in Europe included the co-founders of Resting Reef, demonstrating their increasing clout in sustainable innovation.
