The UK heat-associated deaths have risen sharply during the first half of the summer, highlighting the growing public health risks posed by extreme temperatures. A rapid assessment by the UKHSA estimates that 2,877 heat-associated deaths occurred during two major heat events between May and June 2026, almost double the total number reported for the whole of 2025. The assessment attributes 753 deaths to the heat episode between 24 and 27 May and another 2,124 deaths to the prolonged June heatwave from 21 to 28 June. Although the figures remain provisional, they are already approaching the 2,985 heat-associated deaths recorded in 2022, the highest annual figure on record.
Health experts warn that if additional heatwaves occur later this summer, 2026 could surpass that record, underlining the urgent need for stronger heat preparedness and public awareness.

Record-Breaking Temperatures Intensified Health Risks
The June heatwave lasted eight consecutive days, prompting UKHSA and the Met Office to issue a Red Heat-Health Alert, only the second time England has received its highest-level warning since the alert system was introduced.
The country also experienced record-breaking monthly temperatures. On 26 May, Kew Gardens recorded 31.5°C, the highest May temperature for England, while Lingwood, Norfolk, reached 37.7°C on 26 June, setting a new June record for the country. Such prolonged and exceptionally high temperatures significantly increased the health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Why Early-Season Heatwaves are Especially Dangerous
Health experts note that heatwaves occurring earlier in the summer often have a greater impact because individuals, healthcare services and local communities have had less time to adjust to rising temperatures.

Experts Warn Hotter Summers Could Increase Health Impacts
According to Dr Ross Thompson, Principal Environmental Public Health Scientist at UKHSA and author of the assessment, the interim figures demonstrate the serious health risks posed by prolonged hot weather, particularly for older adults, people with underlying medical conditions and other vulnerable groups.
- He also warned that climate change is expected to make heatwaves longer, more frequent and more intense, increasing the likelihood of additional UK heat-associated deaths in the coming years.
- As temperatures continue to rise, experts say governments, healthcare systems and communities must improve preparedness while encouraging people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged heat exposure and regularly check on vulnerable family members and neighbours during extreme weather events.
With several weeks of summer still remaining, UKHSA cautions that the final 2026 figures could exceed the current national record, making this one of the most severe years for heat-related mortality in the United Kingdom.
