Testing for Biodegradability
Collette buried more than 300 bamboo and bagasse (sugarcane pulp) plates to test their decomposition rate. They broke down completely in six months, leaving only small fragments. Compared to traditional plastics, which can last for hundreds of years, this disintegration occurs quite quickly.
She stressed that although industrial composting systems usually achieve temperatures of up to 60°C, her bamboo plates broke down equally fast in normal environmental settings, indicating that they would also decompose readily in backyard composting systems.
