Nuclear reactors in France halt operations due to extreme heat, as an intense summer heatwave continues to grip the country, placing unusual pressure on France’s energy system and public infrastructure. State-owned utility Électricité de France (EDF) temporarily shut down three nuclear reactors and reduced output at eight others after soaring river temperatures limited the availability of cooling water required for safe reactor operations. At the same time, 37 French departments were placed under the country’s highest red heatwave alert, with temperatures forecast to reach 37°C to 41°C.
The prolonged heat has also triggered wildfire outbreaks, disrupted tourism, increased drowning deaths, and highlighted the growing impact of climate change on Europe’s critical infrastructure.

Heatwave Disrupts Daily Life Across France
- The latest heatwave is the third major episode since May, with more than 25 million people experiencing extreme temperatures.
- France’s national weather agency Météo-France warned that the scorching conditions are expected to persist through the middle of the week.
- Paris was forecast to reach 36°C, while several southern and central regions were expected to record temperatures between 39°C and 40°C.
The severe weather has forced authorities to shorten outdoor events, issue health warnings, and advise residents, particularly older adults and vulnerable groups, to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat.

Tourist Attractions and Events Adjust Operations
Several of France’s most visited landmarks modified operating hours to protect visitors and staff.
The Eiffel Tower closed early over the weekend, while the Louvre Museum and the Musée d’Orsay also shortened visiting hours because of the intense heat.
The extreme conditions additionally affected sporting events, with organizers shortening a stage of the Tour de France due to safety concerns.

Rising Public Health and Environmental Risks
The prolonged heatwave has also had serious consequences beyond the energy sector.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported 139 drowning deaths since 19 June, an 18% increase compared with the same period last year, as more people sought relief in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.
Meanwhile, higher temperatures and dry vegetation have increased wildfire activity across several regions, placing additional strain on emergency services.
Scientists continue to warn that human-induced climate change is making extreme heatwaves across Europe more frequent, longer-lasting, and more intense. The latest disruption to France’s nuclear power network illustrates how rising temperatures are increasingly affecting not only public health but also essential infrastructure.
