As global temperatures continue to rise, countries around the world are experiencing dramatic shifts in weather patterns. By August 2024, 15 nations had shattered previous national heat records. In the UK, February was the second-wettest in 200 years, while Southern Africa endured its driest February in a century. China faced its hottest July since 1961, paired with record-breaking floods, and Central Europe saw catastrophic flooding described as a once-in-300-years event. These extreme events underscore how deeply interconnected the climate crisis is and reveal its unpredictable impacts across diverse regions.

Canada, for example, experienced an unprecedented wildfire season in 2024, with fires consuming large areas of forest, uprooting populations, and wreaking havoc on the environment. A clear connection between the sources of emissions and policy actions still needs to be included, even though efforts to mitigate climate change frequently rely on various policy tools, including market-based incentives and regulatory measures. For example, while being a significant source of emissions, the transport sector continues to have some of the lowest levels of climate policy action among OECD countries. The electrical industry, another important producer of emissions, has also seen a decline in policy action in OECD partner nations. A more calculated approach to climate policy might target industries with high emissions more effectively, leading to more effective reductions.

National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and National Adaptation Communications to the UNFCCC are being created to prepare for the effects of climate-related hazards. Therefore, whether these proposals incorporate practical policy measures and efficient monitoring systems must be considered.
