Tesla’s new compact SUV will have a significant impact on the global EV market, particularly due to its potential affordable price point. Reports indicate that the new compact SUV will be smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the current offerings from the company, with initial pricing estimated to be under $34,000, well below the company’s existing product line. The introduction of this vehicle suggests a change in direction for Elon Musk, who previously pushed back on developing budget EVs in favor of vehicles that can operate autonomously.

What Makes Tesla’s Compact SUV More Affordable Than Existing Models?

  • Decreased Size and Weight: This compact SUV is supposed to have a size of around 4.28 meters and be smaller compared to the Model Y, which has a size of 4.75 meters. Additionally, the weight of this model is estimated to be around 1.5 tonnes, almost 25% lighter than the Model Y’s 2 tonnes.
  • Reduced Capacity Battery Pack: A less powerful battery pack would mean a decreased driving range compared to the Model Y. The battery pack accounts for almost 30-40% of the production cost of the vehicle.
  • Single Engine: Unlike other models, such as the Model Y, that use dual engines, the new compact model will probably use one engine to save cost and complexity during manufacturing.
  • Shanghai Factory Advantage: Tesla is believed to manufacture vehicles in its Shanghai factory at a cost 20–30% lower than at its American plants.

Why Does Tesla Turn to Affordable EVs Now?

  • Need for Budget EVs in the Market: There are many electric cars available worldwide; in fact, in 2023, over 14 million electric cars were sold. However, affordability is still an issue in emerging economies like India and Southeast Asia.
  • Increased Competition: Chinese auto companies, like BYD, are selling EVs for less than $20,000, and now Tesla needs to change its pricing strategy to continue dominating the market worldwide.
  • Change in Strategy: While Elon Musk had canceled plans for producing an EV priced at $25,000 (NV9), in favor of working on Robotaxis, a feasibility analysis found that affordable EVs could be profitable in the short run.
  • Scale up Production: Tesla intends to increase manufacturing capacity beyond China to include Europe and the United States.

Is Tesla’s Upcoming Compact SUV a Viable Candidate for the Global EV Market?

While using smaller batteries and fewer complex motors can drive down the overall cost of a vehicle, it will also reduce driving range, a key consideration for potential buyers of Electric Vehicles (EVs). However, for urban consumers and in emerging markets, a lower price combined with a shorter-range vehicle may be an acceptable compromise. Industry data demonstrates that over 80% of daily trips made using a vehicle on a global scale are less than 50 km away from home, therefore not requiring long-range/high-range vehicles.

Tesla’s new compact SUV represents a strategic return towards affordability and may fundamentally alter the future success of EVs. By implementing a cost-effective manufacturing strategy, using a simplified engineering process, and expanding its operations globally, Tesla may be able to offer more affordable EVs to the masses and, in turn, provide consumers with greater access to electric mobility.
