Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has achieved a significant milestone by declaring its first profit since it opened for business in 2008. The statement highlights the airport’s financial and environmental achievements and was made after a board meeting of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on May 16, 2025, which was presided over by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, who also acts as BIAL Chairperson. Sustainability leads Kempegowda International Airport to achieve its first ever profit, and this accomplishment, which BIAL calls “a major turning point,” demonstrates KIA’s strategic emphasis on operational effectiveness and sustainability, establishing the company as a world leader in aviation.
Pioneering Sustainability with Level 5 Accreditation
Under the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation program, Sustainability leads Kempegowda International Airport to achieve the first ever profit, and KIA became the first airport in Asia to receive Level 5 Accreditation on May 5, 2024. The airport’s impressive 95.6% decrease in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, which allowed it to achieve net-zero emissions in both categories seven years ahead of its 2030 objective, is recognised by this esteemed accreditation. KIA’s dedication to sustainable practices, such as the use of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources, is demonstrated by this milestone. The airport has established a standard for environmental stewardship in the aviation sector with its proactive efforts, including waste management programs and the incorporation of solar electricity.
In addition, KIA received the Silver Award in the 15–38 million passenger category of ACI’s Green Airports Recognition 2025, which had as its theme “Sustainable Energy at Airports.” With this honour, ACI has acknowledged KIA for its sustainability initiatives for the fourth year in a row, solidifying its standing as a leader in environmentally responsible airport operations. These accomplishments have improved the airport’s financial performance by lowering its environmental impact and generating cost savings.

Financial Turnaround and Future Growth
BIAL’s record profit is evidence of KIA’s operational tenacity and strategic foresight. Increased passenger volume, improved revenue streams, and economic sustainability projects are all credited with the financial recovery. Energy-efficient lighting and electric ground support equipment are examples of green technologies that KIA has integrated to lower operating costs and improve its reputation internationally. The airport has a strong financial base thanks to its capacity to handle 15–38 million passengers annually and its cost-cutting measures driven by sustainability.
By extending its infrastructure and better integrating sustainability into its operations, BIAL hopes to maintain this momentum. Plans call for improving passenger services and using more sustainable energy to keep KIA competitive. The airport’s success inspires other airports worldwide by providing an example of how environmental stewardship and financial prosperity may coexist. In addition to being a financial triumph, KIA’s first-ever profit represents a daring move towards a sustainable aviation future as the company innovates more.
