Earth Science: Atmospheric Composition and Climate Full Time

This opportunity is not open to Senior Fellows who are five or more years beyond their PhD.

Research at GISS in Atmospheric Composition and Climate examines how changes in reactive gases and aerosols influence climate through radiation effects, cloud feedbacks, and other climate-related processes. The work also explores how climate change affects atmospheric composition through different feedback mechanisms.

The research spans multiple types of climate simulations, including paleoclimate studies, interannual variability, and future climate projections. A key focus is understanding the policy impacts of human activities, especially emissions pathways designed to reduce multiple environmental harms.

The program evaluates how climate-altering pollutants from specific activities may change under different policy scenarios and how these changes affect regional temperature, precipitation, and air quality. It also includes fundamental research on aerosol and gas-phase processes, microphysics, chemistry, and interactions between the atmosphere and surface sources such as fires, wetlands, and biological activity.

Overall, the research focuses on mechanisms through which atmospheric composition influences climate.
