Supriya‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Sahu, additional Chief Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu, has been bestowed with the Champions of the Earth 2025 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which is the United Nations’ most prestigious environmental award. The award highlights her innovative drive for sustainable cooling and ecosystem restoration, a vital acknowledgment at a time when the increase in average global temperature and occurrences of extreme heat are threatening the existence of life on Earth. Supriya Sahu was honored with the UN’s ‘Champions of the Earth 2025’  for her visionary climate leadership, and her name now stands among five global climate trailblazers chosen this year.

Transformative Impact: Cooling, Green Jobs, Resilience

One of the primary impacts of her interventions to combat climate change is the generation of approximately 2.5 million eco-friendly jobs through her programs, a dramatic increase in the forested area of the land, and the implementation of measures to combat heat in public structures.

Climate resilience in Tamil Nadu has been significantly improved through these actions to a population of almost 12 million people; thus, the state has become a source of inspiration not only for other Indian regions but also for the whole world in terms of the capacity to tackle the effects of climate change.

Her awareness of environmental problems has been around for a long time; she is an old hand when it comes to attending to Mother Nature’s needs. Among her most memorable achievements as the district collector of the Nilgiris, she launched”Operation Blue Mountain,” the pioneering campaign in India to battle single-use plastic, at a time when the world was still not very aware of the plastic pollution problem.

Presently, as the head of Tamil Nadu Environment, Climate Change, and Forests Department, she has been the driving force behind courageous initiatives like the establishment of Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC), the very first climate vehicle in India that is a state-run non-profit organization. With it, the state has convened numerous “missions” from coastal restoration, wetlands revival, and mangrove creation to huge tree plantation campaigns aimed at both reinforcing resilience and conserving biodiversity.

A Model for a Warming World

UN Environment Program (UNEP) executive director, Inger Andersen, praised Sahu’s leadership as “a pattern that can be copied by cities and states that are experiencing additional heatwaves“.

Sahu’s method of transferring “the cooling effect of the tree” from the countryside to the city not only shows how local governments, together with urban authorities, can handle climate change adaptation in a practical and human-focused manner, but also the role they have in this issue entirely apart from national governments.

Supriya Sahu honored with UN’s ‘Champions of the Earth 2025’; the international society has acknowledged and appreciated local leadership and nature-based solutions. The truth is, her work is a testament to the fact that while the world is under tremendous climate pressure, there is still room for hope if climate change is managed in an effective, caring, and science-based way.
