According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, a strong 6.1 Earthquake rattled Crete on May 22, 2025, had an epicentre 56 kilometres northeast of Heraklion. Residents were disturbed, and broad alarms were issued by the earthquake, which struck at 06:19 Greek time and had a focal depth of 60.3 km. Fire departments and municipal teams have been called in to handle the aftermath and guarantee public safety due to the earthquake, which was felt as far afield as the Aegean islands, mainland Greece, and even Athens.
Widespread Impact and Immediate Response
Residents of Chania and Rethymno received Google alerts with safety recommendations on their mobile phones due to the earthquake’s exceptionally high intensity. According to reports, the shocks were felt in Athens, highlighting the earthquake’s widespread impact. The area was kept on edge by the numerous aftershocks that followed. To evaluate and manage the situation, brigade trucks patrolled the area while the Crete fire department was put on general alert. According to early reports, there were modest damages, such as rubble falling from a building in Heraklion and minor landslides on the provincial road network. The Crete region’s and its municipalities’ services are well-equipped and ready to handle any new developments. In an interview, Efthymios Lekkas, head of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation, emphasised the earthquake’s considerable depth and pointed out that its location in the ocean probably lowers the chance of a tsunami, providing some comfort to the impacted areas.

Geological Context and Local Vigilance
Intense seismic activity has historically been produced where the earthquake occurred, the meeting point of the African and European tectonic plates. Lekkas stressed that the earthquake is unrelated to Santorini’s volcanic activity and underlined that its depth of 60.3 kilometres reduces the likelihood of significant surface damage. The incident raised awareness of Crete’s seismic vulnerability, even if its effects were mostly contained. The mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Manolis Menegakis, told Mega TV that the earthquake was “very strong,” but he also confirmed that there was no significant damage in his area. He said, “We are vigilant,” demonstrating the proactive approach taken by local government. Although the depth and offshore epicentre of the earthquake have prevented more serious effects, the incident serves as a reminder of the geological hazards in the area. As a strong 6.1 Earthquake rattled Crete, the Residents and authorities in Crete are alert and ready for any additional earthquake activity as the aftershocks continue.
