Spain’s seas reached record high temperatures after an intense late-spring heatwave pushed ocean conditions across the country to unusual levels in May, according to data from Puertos del Estado. The spike in sea temperatures has raised concerns among scientists about emerging marine heatwaves and long-term ecosystem stress in surrounding waters.
The readings show that Spanish waters experienced their warmest May on record, with widespread anomalies stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean and Balearic Islands.
Unusual Sea Temperature Records Across Spain
The monitoring network recorded extreme ocean warming across nearly all coastal regions, marking one of the most significant marine temperature events in recent years.
Key observations include:
- 18 of 29 buoys recorded all-time May temperature highs
- Mahón buoy (Menorca) reached 26.58°C, the highest in the network
- Dragonera buoy recorded 26.2°C
- Tarragona reached 24.64°C, while Valencia hit 23.47°C
- Cabo Begur recorded 24.47°C

- Coastal Tarragona peaked at 24.5°C on May 30
- Barcelona reached 24.2°C shortly after
- Historic May highs were also recorded in Bilbao, Pasaia, Gijón, and Langosteira
- Multiple offshore buoys along Galicia also registered record temperatures
In total, 12 of 15 offshore buoys and 6 of 14 coastal buoys reported their highest May readings since records began.

The spike in temperatures coincided with an extreme atmospheric heatwave that affected Spain and large parts of Europe in late May. According to AEMET, air temperatures in some regions resembled summer conditions rather than spring.
