According to local officials, catastrophic floods in Guizhou province in southwest China killed six people on Thursday. The southwest China floods were triggered by ongoing heavy rains and upstream inflows, causing significant flooding in Rongjiang and Congjiang counties. As a result, mass evacuations have been carried out in both locations.

More than 80,000 individuals have been evacuated from the flood-affected areas. In response to the situation, the flood control emergency level has been elevated to Level I, the highest, in both Rongjiang and Congjiang counties.

Emergency Response Measures Intensify in Rongjiang and Congjiang

Since Monday, Rongjiang, a county known for Cun Chao, a rural football league involving over 100 village teams and drawing large crowds of fans across the country, has experienced intense rainstorms. Given the scale and severity of the flooding, rescue and relief operations have become essential.

To manage the worsening conditions, the provincial emergency department allocated disaster relief supplies. Relief items, including 30,000 bottles of drinking water and 10,000 bowls of instant noodles, were delivered to the two counties using both high-speed rail and road transport.

Local Authorities Act Amid Rising Threats

Local authorities stated that the flood risk had been substantially upgraded following intense weather and upstream inflows, prompting immediate mitigation efforts to save communities at risk. They verified reports of having arranged swift disaster relief efforts as a way of providing timely support to affected communities.

Now at its highest level of emergency response, rescues and logistics assistance continue within the areas worst affected. The authorities went on to state how they were following developments regarding the weather closely, as further rain was forecast during the next few days.

The southwest China floods have underscored the need for proactive flood management strategies, particularly in vulnerable rural areas such as Rongjiang and Congjiang.
