South America is burning as it has faced its most severe forest fire season in over two decades, with millions of acres burning across many nations. The blazes came during the region’s greatest drought; climate experts had predicted this for decades.

So far this year, satellite data analysed by Brazil’s space research organisation INPE have found a record-breaking 346,112 fire hotspots across 13 South American countries. All that smoke smothers significant parts of the continent, and NASA satellites have photographed plumes from 1 million miles away. The fires have become a devastating symbol of the combined impacts of climate change, human activity, and natural weather patterns, and the situation is intensifying by the day.

Brazil: Ground Zero for the Fires and Drought

In Brazil, the continent’s largest country, around 59 per cent of the country is experiencing drought conditions—an area roughly half the size of the United States—and Amazon Basin River flows are at historic lows. Three of the country’s six huge ecosystems—the Amazon, the Cerrado, and the Pantanal wetlands—are experiencing extreme drying, amplifying the fire risks.

“We are facing one of the worst droughts in history,” stated Ane Alencar, director of science at the Amazon Environmental Research Institute. She also noted that the flames are the most severe since 2005 and will last until the rains arrive, which is usually in October. However, with the unpredictability of climate change, even that is no longer certain. “We don’t know if rain is going to come,” she said, echoing the growing fears across the country.

The Perfect Storm: Human Activity, El Niño, and Climate Change

The fires and droughts are fueled by a deadly combination of human activity and natural phenomena. Intentional fires set by ranchers and farmers to clear land—coupled with the El Niño weather pattern that brings drier conditions—are igniting widespread destruction. Climate scientists have been warning for decades that rising global temperatures would lead to more frequent and intense droughts. Steve Schwartzman, the Environmental Defense Fund’s senior head of forest policy, confirmed that the current situation aligns with long-standing climate predictions. “This is exactly what all climate models have been predicting for 20 years or more,” Schwartzman explained.

According to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, the prolonged dry spell is primarily attributed to global warming rather than the cyclical El Niño pattern. The study predicts that seasonal droughts in the region will lengthen by 12 to 30%, intensify by 17 to 42%, and increase in frequency by up to 42% by the end of this century. The implications are stark—without immediate and large-scale action, South America’s fire seasons could worsen each year, becoming the new normal.

The Role of Deforestation

Drier weather implies drier forests; when ranchers or farmers start fires to clear land, they are more likely to lose control of it. While Alencar points out those Indigenous tribes had used small-scale fires to manage land for ages, the forest was humid enough to keep them under control. She said climate change has changed that reality, so “any fire activity caused by humans can actually have a huge impact.

Deforestation is increasingly a leading cause of forest fires, notably in the Amazon. Not only does destroying the land make it easier for fires to spread, but losing the Amazon, which covers 2.5 million square miles, means losing a vital carbon sink for global warming. That deepens the climatic changes that are exacerbating fire risks.

“It appears to me that things are getting worse, year after year,” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated during a recent visit to the drought-stricken state of Amazonas, where all 62 municipalities have declared a state of emergency. More than 340,000 people are reportedly affected.

A Growing Sense of Urgency: What Needs to Change

Erika De Berenguer Cesar, a tropical forest ecologist at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, voiced concerns that if substantial action isn’t taken soon, 2024 could mark the beginning of an irreversible trend. “It’s going to get much, much worse,” she said, reflecting the urgent need for better fire management, climate mitigation strategies, and international cooperation.

While Indigenous communities have long practised controlled burning to manage land, the current fires are no longer manageable due to the extreme dryness. “The forest used to be humid enough to keep small fires under control,” Alencar noted. “But now, any fire activity caused by humans can have a huge impact.”

The international community has also been slow to respond. Despite repeated warnings, investments in sustainable forest management and reforestation have lagged. Brazil and other South American nations urgently need better policies, stricter enforcement of anti-deforestation laws, and global financial support to combat the climate crisis.
