EV demand climbed 20-25% amid the West Asia war through March 2026, and some industry experts have noted that while gas prices remained steady domestically over this period, other global events impacted how consumers choose to use transportation in India, which is moving more rapidly to cleaner alternatives than ever before. The increase in EV demand is indicative of how present-day geopolitical factors will continue to have an effect on the mobility options available to people in India.

EV Demand Climbed 20–25% Amid West Asia War

What Triggered the Sudden Surge in EV Demand in March 2026?

  • Uncertainty around fuel prices due to geopolitical instability: Ongoing unrest in West Asia created uncertainty about crude oil availability, and while prices in India hadn’t increased, prices in Europe had risen substantially. According to the IEA, volatile oil prices cause an immediate change in electric vehicle adoption trends.
  • Consumer anticipatory behavior: Consumers started buying EVs before any potential increase in fuel prices. It is a typical consumer reaction to any global event that causes instability in oil prices.
  • Rapid rise in passenger vehicle category: Sales of passenger vehicles hit their highest level at 4.64 million units in FY 2025–26, recording an annual growth rate of 7.9%. In the month of March, the sales rose by 16% YoY to 442,000 units.
  • Registrations of EVs spiked: Registrations of electric cars increased by more than 83% in FY 26.

How Are Policy, Affordability, and Macroeconomic Factors Supporting EV Growth?

  • Affordability through policy initiatives: The reduction in GST applicable on EVs (down to 5%) and state-level subsidies have made the EVs much cheaper, competing well with ICE cars.
  • Increase in income: The changes made in personal income taxes and improved economic performance have increased people’s income, thus helping them afford EVs.
  • Lower financing options: The reduction in the repo rate by the RBI has lowered the cost of financing EVs for middle-class consumers.
  • Charging facilities availability: The number of public charging stations in India crossed 12,000+ in 2025; under the FAME-II scheme, the government aims to increase the number significantly.

How Will the West Asian Crisis Affect India’s Long-Term Transition to EV?

The ongoing regional instability and conflict in West Asia have highlighted how exposed India, the most oil-dependent economy in the world (more than 85% of its crude oil needs are imported), is to disruptions in the global supply chain. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stated that even minor disruptions of the global supply chain adversely affect domestic fuel prices.

EV demand climbed 20-25% amid the West Asia war, and is indicative of the longer-term structural shift occurring in India’s mobility ecosystem. With government initiatives, improved infrastructure, and increased awareness of energy security being implemented across the country, India’s transition to EVs appears to be gaining irreversible momentum despite uncertainty in the global economic environment.
