Securing investments to maintain and scale food system change will be the main focus of the Second Food Systems Summit Stocktake, which is set for July 28–30, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With just five years left to complete the 2030 Agenda, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said that funding is essential to accomplishing the SDGs, which the UN has mandated.

A stakeholder review and a progress report on improvements since the 2023 Stocktake will be produced at the event, which Italy is co-hosting. In order to meet SDG targets, the summit will also make it easier to follow national food system pathways and monitor commitments.

Preparatory Briefings and Regional Consultations

Before the Stocktake, a number of briefings will be held to guarantee cross-sectoral, inclusive participation. From February 24 to 28, 2025, Mohammed said, a joint briefing for UN Headquarters in Nairobi, Rome, and Geneva will take place in Nairobi. The UN Regional Forums on Sustainable Development, which will take place from March to May, will also feature five regional briefings.

The Second Food Systems Summit Stocktake will coincide with other significant global gatherings that are intended to promote advancements in the transformation of the food system. These include the Third United Nations Ocean Conference in France, the Second World Summit on Social Development in Qatar, the UNFCCC COP 30 in Brazil, and the Fourth Financing for Development Conference in Spain.

Progress from the First Stocktake and Future Pathways

Public-private-community partnerships and increased private-sector involvement were highlighted in the inaugural Summit Stocktake. The ‘Call to Action‘ issued by the Secretary-General outlined six priority areas, including debt restructuring, investments, budget support, and concessional financing. It also emphasized how critical it is to address food security during emergencies.

A paradigm for incorporating food systems into international initiatives to address hunger, poverty, inequality, biodiversity loss, and climate change was presented at the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. Given the persistent economic difficulties, social disparities, and geopolitical conflicts, Mohammed emphasized how urgent it is to restructure food systems.

She thanked Ethiopia for organizing the event and emphasized the importance of hosting the second Stocktake in a developing nation, reaffirming the commitment to inclusive global food system advancement.
