According to a recent study titled “The Future Lifespan of Earth’s Oxygenated Atmosphere,” published in Nature Geoscience, oxygen on Earth will disappear in around a billion years, rendering the planet inhospitable for the majority of living organisms on Earth today. Scientists predict Earth’s final days after Toho University researchers ran 400,000 simulations on a supercomputer using NASA’s planetary modeling.
The models examined how the Earth’s atmosphere might change and concluded that deoxygenation would inevitably happen. The high oxygen content of the contemporary Earth’s atmosphere is thought to be a remotely detectable indicator of life. The average projected longevity of Earth’s oxygen-rich atmosphere, which has oxygen levels over 1% of the current atmospheric level, is 1.08 ± 0.14 billion years, according to the study.
Sun’s Aging Will Trigger Climate and Atmospheric Collapse
The sun will get hotter and brighter as it ages, drastically changing the environment on Earth. Scientists predict that rising solar fluxes will weaken the global carbon cycle, raise surface temperatures, and cause water to evaporate. As a result of these changes, the death of plants, which are necessary for the creation of oxygen, will cause the atmosphere to collapse.
According to the study, the atmosphere will return to its methane-rich pre-Great Oxidation Earth condition. This transition will probably take place before Earth approaches a wet greenhouse state and before surface water is significantly removed from the atmosphere.
Kazumi Ozaki, an assistant professor at Toho University, says scientists have long debated the end of Earth’s biosphere in terms of the carbonate-silicate geochemical cycle and the sun’s brightening. He continues that global warming and a drop in atmospheric CO₂ over geological durations are two effects of this theoretical framework.

A Shorter Timeline for the End of the Biosphere
Ozaki claims that previous projections indicated that the Earth’s biosphere would perish in two billion years due to warming and a lack of CO₂, which is necessary for photosynthesis. However, because atmospheric deoxygenation began far earlier, the latest study reduces that estimate to one billion years.
The scientists employed a stochastic technique in a combined biogeochemistry and climate model. Scientists predict Earth’s final days using this approach, which also shows the possible involvement of atmospheric organic haze at the final stage of planetary habitability and underscores the need for discovering strong biosignatures for exoplanets, especially those with little or no oxygen.
