Scientists intend to create a model that will enable satellites to identify krill populations from space by gradually increasing the quantity of krill in water samples and analyzing the light absorption.

Krill’s Role in the Antarctic Ecosystem

Antarctic krill is essential to keep the ocean environment in balance. The world’s largest creatures, such as migratory whales that travel thousands of kilometers to graze in Antarctic seas, eat them. In addition to being essential for marine predators, krill also help regulate the climate.

Microscopic plants that grow on sea ice and absorb massive quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are the food source for krill. When whales eat krill and then expel nutrient-rich excrement, it fertilizes marine plants and aids in carbon absorption; the cycle continues. Scientists are concerned that this cycle might be disrupted by warming waters, which would have an impact on krill populations as well as the larger Antarctic ecosystem.

Downie stressed how critical it is to properly manage krill habitats. To maintain the sustainability of krill populations, which are essential to ocean health, he emphasized the necessity of creating marine protected areas.
