The research defined a species as “exposed” if more than half of its range coincided with areas where these occurrences occurred more frequently.
According to the research, heat waves and droughts have increased dramatically worldwide, especially in regions with a high amphibian population. Significant increases in heat waves were experienced by 43% of frogs, 41% of caecilians, and 14% of salamanders out of the 7,202 species analyzed. In the meantime, 16% of all amphibians, including salamanders, experienced droughts more often.
There is more than just a theoretical relationship between exposure and extinction danger. According to the study, species exposed to heat waves had a 1.84-fold increased chance of being uplisted to a higher concern category on the IUCN Red List between 2004 and 2022. Exposure to drought multiplied the risk by 1.66. These findings underscore how rising temperatures threaten salamander survival in theory and have measurable impacts across decades.
