The Polar Vortex in the US is anticipated to engulf a large portion of the continental region, bringing freezing temperatures to the Deep South. An Arctic blast with snow and dangerously severe wind chills is expected to affect over 300 million Americans. The Great Lakes area will also receive rain and snow showers due to the cold front, according to the National Weather Service.

The next winter storm comes after a string of storms that dumped significant amounts of snow and ice on the nation. With variable amounts of precipitation and freezing temperatures, this massive polar vortex is expected to impact several areas, including Texas, the Northeast, and the Southeast.

Regional Forecasts for Hard-Hit Areas

Texas

According to the Fort Worth National Weather Service, locations north and northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth have the best chance of receiving more than 0.1 inches of snow during the weekend.

Massachusetts

Snowfall totals in Massachusetts are expected to be between two and four inches. Snowfall in Rhode Island and Connecticut might range from half an inch to three inches. Early next week, sub-zero wind chills are predicted for the northeast.

Illinois

Chicago will have below-freezing temperatures on Sunday and Monday night, with wind chills ranging from -15 to -25 degrees. Single-digit highs and the possibility of lake-effect snow will exacerbate the severe conditions.

Indiana

The snowfall in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas could be less than an inch. Nonetheless, the outlook is dominated by extremely cold temperatures, with lows in the single digits.

Georgia

Over the weekend, Georgia has a roughly 50% chance of precipitation in the Northwest, with some snowfall also expected in other parts of the Southeast.

Florida

The Sunshine State will experience cooler-than-normal temperatures due to the polar vortex, even if there won’t be any snowfall. According to Tampa Bay’s National Weather Service, these cooler temperatures will still be significant for the area.

Washington, D.C.

There might be major interruptions when the approaching storm dumps up to six inches of snow on the nation’s capital.

This icy stretch demonstrates how the Polar Vortex in the US impacts regions unaccustomed to such weather. As the storm intensifies, locals are urged to prepare for severe conditions, including freezing temperatures and possible snowfall.
