In honor of the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), PM Modi will launch Mission Mausam, a historic project designed to make India a climate-smart and weather-ready country. The occasion, which will be held in New Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, will be a significant step in enhancing India’s capacity for climate resilience and weather monitoring.

PM Modi will launch Mission Mausam

Mission Mausam employs high-performance computing systems, satellites, and next-generation radars to enhance atmospheric observations. Along with delivering vital air quality data to assist long-term weather management and intervention efforts, the mission will also advance India’s understanding of weather and climate processes.

IMD Vision-2047: A Roadmap for Weather Resilience

PM Modi will launch Mission Mausam and present the IMD Vision-2047 document, which provides a strategic blueprint for climate change adaptation and weather resilience, as part of the event. This groundbreaking publication outlines developments in weather forecasting, climate change mitigation, and innovative weather management techniques to improve India’s readiness for climate challenges.

The Union Cabinet authorized Mission Mausam in September 2024, and it has a two-year budget of ₹2,000 crore. The National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the India Meteorological Department will carry out the project.

Mission Mausam is anticipated to have a major positive impact on vital industries such as agriculture, disaster relief, defense, aviation, energy, and health. It will also support data-driven decision-making in environmental monitoring, transportation, and urban planning, making India more climate resilient.

A number of seminars, events, and activities have been planned to honor IMD’s contributions to meteorological and climate services in celebration of the department’s 150th anniversary. These programs demonstrate how important IMD has been in helping India better adapt to the changing environment.
