The Function of Peatlands and Mangroves in Carbon Storage

Peatlands and mangroves are among the most effective natural carbon sinks due to their distinct soil composition. Their soils are water-saturated and oxygen-limited, slowing the breakdown of organic matter and delaying the release of stored carbon. These ecosystems provide an important buffer against climate change by sequestering significant amounts of atmospheric carbon when left alone.

Changes in land use and climate variability, including El Niño-induced dry periods, pose severe challenges to these ecosystems. Peatlands and mangroves emit massive volumes of CO2 into the atmosphere when drained, cleared, or burned for agricultural expansion, palm oil plantations, or urban growth. Deforestation and peatland degradation have already contributed significantly to regional carbon emissions in Indonesia and Malaysia, emphasising the critical need for intervention.

Professor David Taylor, the study’s co-author, emphasised the need to include these ecosystems in the Paris Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). He remarked, “Including both peatlands and mangroves in the new NDCs (NDCs 3.0), which countries must update and re-commit to every five years, can undoubtedly assist in enhancing regional ambition through higher emission reduction objectives. However, this would necessitate significant investment in successful conservation and restoration measures.”

Economic and Policy Implications of Peatland and Mangrove Conservation

Peatlands and mangroves provide economic benefits and ecological significance, which can help support sustainable development. Due to their wetland soils, these environments have long been regarded as unsuited for conventional agriculture. However, Assistant Professor Pierre Taillardat, a co-author of the article, emphasised that their importance should not be judged solely regarding agricultural productivity. He stated, “Wetland soils may have little agronomic value because they are generally unsuitable for traditional farming, but they are unparalleled in their ability to store and preserve carbon.” If carbon were valued like other essential commodities and sold on the carbon credits market, it might create enormous potential for conservation and restoration initiatives.

Southeast Asian governments could provide financial incentives for local communities to participate in conservation efforts by monetising carbon storage through carbon trading schemes. This would create a win-win situation in which sustainable livelihoods may coexist with environmental stewardship.

The study also gave updated estimates of emissions from disturbed peatlands and mangroves in Southeast Asia between 2001 and 2022. The breakdown by land-use type and country provides crucial data for policymakers to identify emission hotspots and prioritise conservation efforts accordingly.

The researchers urged ASEAN countries to take immediate steps to strengthen Mangrove Conservation. Given their importance in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development, policymakers must prioritise legislation, restoration projects, and community-based conservation methods. Without rapid and sustained action, the loss of these critical carbon sinks threatens regional efforts to meet climate targets and alleviate the effects of global warming.

ASEAN countries, in particular, have a unique capacity to set the standard in sustainable land management by investing in restoration projects and enforcing stronger environmental legislation.

With the correct investments and policy commitments, Southeast Asia’s peatlands and mangroves can continue to play an essential role in preventing climate change. Their preservation not only helps reduce emissions but also improves biodiversity protection and provides economic advantages, encouraging a more sustainable future for the region.
