According to new research from satellite imagery, Earth’s nights are becoming brighter. A significant increase in nighttime illumination around the world has been detected through a recent study published by the journal Nature. The researchers found there has been considerable growth in the levels of nighttime illumination, mainly due to the increase in human activity, but that the increase is not the same everywhere. There are areas of Africa and Asia that are rapidly electrifying, and Europe has dark policies for intentionally dimming illumination at night. - Not All Areas See Growth Equally: Surprisingly, contrary to previous expectations, the increase in brightness is not evenly distributed. Some regions may see increases in lighting while others experience declines.

- LED Lighting and Energy Efficiency Leading to Dimming: There is a noticeable dimming trend observed in Europe, with France experiencing a reduction of 4%, owing to LED lights and energy-efficiency measures.

Why Is the Consequence of Increased Night Brightness Important to the Earth as a Whole?
Researchers with the International Dark-Sky Association have shown that too much artificial light (also known as light pollution) disrupts ecosystems through their impact on nocturnal animals, migratory patterns, and even plant growing cycles. With the increase of light pollution, research shows that over 80% of the world’s population now lives beneath these light-polluted skies, meaning the ability to see the stars and how they used to naturally guide us has been diminished.
