These overlapping ecosystems had virus loads that were 10 times higher.

Axel Brockmann claims that when regulated species are brought into new habitats or when wild species are pushed into smaller areas as a result of habitat degradation, the likelihood of spillover increases.

In the 1980s, when western honey bees were introduced to India, which is home to more than 700 bee species, including four native honey bees, there were serious virus epidemics. While the variant that affects honey bees in the West is less virulent, this virus, which is deadly to larvae, is still one of the biggest risks to Asiatic honey bees.

Experts caution that the spread of these viruses from managed bees to wild pollinators may result in changes that increase the viruses’ pathogenicity, but the exact mechanisms of transmission are yet unclear. The hazards of viral changes in wild pollinators were brought to light by Maurer. These findings indicate the increasing threats posed by new bee diseases, highlighting the need for urgent intervention.

Research suggests that by 2050, these pressures may cause approximately 40% of bumblebee species in the Indian Himalayas to lose over 90% of their habitat. To mitigate the devastating effects of new bee diseases and other threats, experts urge thorough investigation and monitoring of viral dangers, especially those that impact wild pollinators.
