A new ancient coral reef discovered in the Mediterranean has astonished marine scientists after researchers unveiled a sprawling white coral ecosystem deep beneath the Gulf of Naples. And it was found more than 500 metres below the surface, this rare discovery by the Italian National Research Council (CNR) marks a milestone for European marine science, highlighting that ancient reef systems still thrive in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
A Hidden Reef Beneath Naples
The reef was located in the Dohrn Canyon, just off the coast of Naples, during an EU-funded exploration which was led by marine biologist Giorgio Castellan and his team at CNR’s Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR). The mission was part of the Demetra Expedition aboard the research vessel Gaia Blu, which used a remotely operated submarine to map vertical walls reaching over 80 metres in height and coral structures more than 2 metres wide.
It is mainly composed of deep-water “white corals”, such as the Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata, the reef also hosts black corals, marine sponges and traces of fossilized oysters and ancient coral species. These findings were documented by researchers from the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station in Naples and the University Federico II of Naples, who highlighted that the structure shows “a true geological testimony of a distant past”.
As per the University of Chicago (UOC), early carbon dating suggests parts of the reef could be as old as 60,000 years, a period that concurs with immense interglacial warming. This makes the reef not only a living ecosystem but also a critical archive of ancient oceanic and climatic conditions.
