Nestlé India has taken a significant step forward in its dedication to technology-driven operations by opening a brand-new, cutting-edge Distribution Center (DC) in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Nestlé India‘s paperless distribution center is boosting sustainability features, including the Digital Twin, a virtual planning tool that enables warehouse teams to model various operating situations and take well-informed actions. The tool is already installed in this DC, making it the first in the company’s network. The tool improves operational planning and readiness.

The facility operates entirely digitally, eliminating the need for paper records. It consists of an Operations Command Hub, sensor-equipped material handling equipment, a digital rack inspection system, and a CCTV system with AI capabilities. Together, these features provide a robust and safe technical environment.

Logistics Innovation and Industry Benchmarks

The facility sets industry standards with approximately 20,000 pallet locations and the largest cold room for storing chocolate in any Nestlé India distribution hub. It features a separate repacking center and was finished in a record seven months. Additionally, the warehouse has the first shuttle racking system in India, a dense storage solution that dramatically increases space usage.

Nestlé India’s Head of Supply Chain, Varun Gupta, says the Bhiwandi Distribution Center exemplifies the team’s creativity and commitment. According to him, the center is a “symphony” of information and product flow that combines digitalized operations, coordinated planning based on AI and ML, optimal automation using shuttle racking, and distinctive omnichannel service models for clients. Nestlé India’s paperless distribution center boosting sustainability, also demonstrates the brand’s leadership in integrating technology for improved efficiency.

Sustainability Measures in Transport and Logistics

Nestlé India’s transportation plan demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability. By lowering greenhouse gas emissions and increasing operating efficiency, Gupta revealed that 25% of the freight transported on the Sanand-Bhiwandi route is now powered by alternative fuel, helping the firm achieve its Net Zero objectives.

He said the logistics team further established an Operations Command Hub and a Logistics Operations Competence Center to incorporate sustainability into the business’s larger logistical structure. Ongoing cooperation with logistics partners is bolstering this project, and preparations are underway to increase the number of alternate-fuel trucks on the Sanand-Bhiwandi corridor.

In India’s FMCG industry, the Bhiwandi Distribution Center is a paradigm for digitally-first and sustainable supply chain architecture.
