Nepal’s Yala Glacier was declared dead, making it the first in Asia and the third worldwide, after Ayoloco Glacier in Mexico and OK Glacier in Iceland. According to recent studies, Yala, formerly an essential part of the Himalayan ice-scape, has receded by around 784 meters, or 66%, since the 1970s. Rajeshwar Singh, a BJP MLA from Lucknow, emphasized this glacial death, highlighting the growing climate problem in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region, where glacier melt has increased by 65% since the early 2000s. Inscribed with a record-high CO2 concentration of 426 parts per million (ppm) in May 2025, the memorial stone today serves as a sobering reminder of the environmental cost of human activity.
Accelerating Glacier Loss Threatens South Asia’s Lifeline
Over two billion people depend on the 3,500-kilometer-long HKH region, which is home to 54,000 glaciers and supplies water to ten major rivers, including the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Indus. However, only seven glaciers are observed yearly, revealing serious oversight deficiencies. Earth has lost 9.6 trillion tonnes of glacial ice since 1961, responsible for 21% of the rise in sea level worldwide. The retreat of glaciers like Yala in the Himalayas threatens South Asia’s food security and energy output by endangering irrigation, hydropower, and water supplies. Furthermore, the region’s glacial lakes have increased by 50% since the 1990s, increasing the likelihood of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). Especially for susceptible Himalayan states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, which are among India’s most climate-risk-prone regions, devastating occurrences in Bhutan (2017) and Sikkim (2023) serve as sobering reminders of this escalating hazard.

A Global Mourning: From Yala to Collective Action

Following a devastating catastrophe in 2017, Bhutan unofficially marked the disappearance of its Lemthang Glacier. Although aggressive mitigation can halt the decline, scientists warn that glacier loss will continue even if global warming is limited to 1.5°C. The statement made by Rajeshwar Singh, “The stone left at Yala Glacier isn’t just a memorial—it’s a warning,” strikes a profound chord. Today’s inaction is tomorrow’s treachery. He calls for urgent action to protect forests, increase energy efficiency, plant trees, and switch to renewable energy. The message is obvious as glacier deaths increase: immediate emission reductions and sustainable behaviors are imperative to protect the earth for future generations. Singh’s catchphrase, “Gear up, Step up, Speak out,” calls for immediate group accountability.
