Tetragonula iridipennis and Lepidotrigona arcifera, two stingless bee species, are transforming agriculture in Nagaland. Because they are non-aggressive and excellent pollinators, these native bees increase agricultural yields and farmers’ profits. This modern use of Nagaland stingless bees is gaining momentum in the northeastern region of India.

Safe and Effective Pollination

Unlike conventional honeybees, stingless bees are safe for farmers to utilize while pollinating crops in sensitive settings like greenhouses. According to research from Nagaland University, these bees significantly improve fruit set and seed quality in crops including dragon fruit, watermelons, tomatoes, cucumbers, brinjals, chillies, and king chilies. For example, compared to crops that were not pollinated, fruit set rose by about 30% and seed weight improved by more than 60% in chilli plants. Because of their delicate disposition, they are perfect for settings where control and safety are crucial.

Additional Income Through Honey Production

Beyond pollination, stingless bees produce medicinal honey, which is highly valued for its purity and health benefits. This honey offers farmers an additional source of income, mainly because the bees produce smaller quantities that are less susceptible to adulteration. The development of scientific rearing techniques has enabled farmers to maintain and multiply bee colonies effectively, integrating traditional knowledge with modern practices.

Empowering Farmers Through Training

In an attempt to promote sustainable beekeeping, Nagaland University carried out training programs in different districts to teach farmers scientific beekeeping techniques. The training included hive management, species identification, and the ecological function of the pollinators. Over 260 farmers learned to raise stingless bees and improve crop yield and honey quality.

In Conclusion

Introducing Nagaland stingless bees is a promising development for sustainable agriculture in the region. These bees improve agricultural yields and incomes through enhanced pollination and the production of premium honey. In addition to providing a scalable paradigm for ecologically responsible farming in Northeastern India, this project aids in conserving biodiversity.
