The UK’s oldest satellite Skynet 1A, was shifted, but it seems that no record exists of who did it, when they did it, or why. Skynet-1A was placed high over the east coast of Africa in 1969, a few months after the first human landed on the moon, to transmit communications for British soldiers. It may have been anticipated that gravity would have drawn the spacecraft considerably further east, above the Indian Ocean, when it stopped operating a few years later. However, Skynet-1A is currently 22,369 miles (36,000 km) over the Americas, which is half a planet distant.
It seems doubtful that the half-ton military spacecraft just wandered to its current location due to orbital mechanics. In the mid-1970s, it was most likely ordered to use its thrusters to move west. Who that was, and what their purpose and authority were, is the subject of discussion. Expert Analysis and Potential Conspiracies
Dr. Stuart Eves, a space consultant, adds, “It’s still relevant because whoever did move Skynet-1A did us few favors.” As it wanders back and forth like a pebble in the bottom of a bowl, it is now located at 105 degrees West longitude in what is known as a “gravity well.” Regrettably, this frequently puts it near other satellite traffic. Since it’s dead, there’s a chance it may collide with anything, and since it’s ‘our’ satellite, we’re still accountable, he says.
Dr. Eves has searched the National Archives, ancient satellite catalogs, and conversations with satellite specialists across the globe; he has not been able to uncover any hints about the latter stages of the life of the UK’s oldest satellite Skynet 1A. We do know that a US Air Force Delta rocket launched Skynet-1A into space after it was built in the US by the dysfunctional Philco Ford aerospace company. London was able to safely connect with British soldiers as far away as Singapore thanks to the first Skynet satellite, which completely changed the UK’s telecommunications capabilities. In a recent article on the history of the Skynet program, which is currently in its fifth generation, Dr. Aaron Bateman noted that, from a technological perspective, Skynet-1A was more American than British because the United States both created and launched it.

During ‘Oakout,’ a Skynet crew from Oakhanger would travel to the USAF satellite facility in Sunnyvale, sometimes referred to as the Blue Cube, and run Skynet. At this point, when Oakhanger was offline for necessary repair, temporary control was handed over to the United States. Maybe the relocation may have taken place at that time.
Following Oakhanger’s loss of satellite sight in June 1977, the official, if partial, records of Skynet-1A’s condition indicate that final commanding was entrusted to the Americans. That being said, Skynet-1A should have been placed in an “orbital graveyard” instead of being permitted to expire in an uncomfortable location. This alludes to an area further higher in the sky where there is no chance of outdated space debris colliding with operational communications satellites.

Present-Day Concerns and Future Solutions
Although graveyarding is now widespread, space sustainability was not a major concern in the 1970s. Since then, attitudes have shifted due to the crowded space domain. Up to four times a day, an operational satellite in 105 degrees West longitude may observe a piece of trash passing within 50 km of its location. Although they may appear to be far apart, given the speeds at which these abandoned items travel, they are beginning to approach each other too closely.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the UK’s National Space Operations Centre continuously monitors Skynet-1A. If a very near conjunction is anticipated, other satellite operators are alerted in the event they are required to take defensive measures. But in the end, the British government might need to consider transferring the outdated satellite to a more secure area.
Technologies to collect trash left in space are being developed. The UK Space Agency is already supporting initiatives to accomplish this at lower altitudes, and both the Chinese and the Americans have demonstrated that it is feasible to capture outdated gear even in the type of high orbit that Skynet-1A occupies. Moriba Jah, an aeronautical engineering professor at the University of Texas at Austin, said that “space junk pieces are like ticking time bombs.” He added, “We need to avoid what I call super-spreader events. When these things explode, or something collides with them, it generates thousands of pieces of debris that then become a hazard to something else that we care about.”
