Rescue operations continued into Tuesday morning amidst uncertainty about the number of people still trapped beneath the debris.

The 30-meter-tall (100-foot-tall) billboard succumbed to the fierce rain and winds. It crushed unsuspecting victims below. By late night, 47 individuals were successfully rescued from the site.

Authorities revealed that the fatal billboard was illegally installed, raising questions about its structural integrity and safety. Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine accountability and prevent future tragedies.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mobilized a coordinated response. It involved fire services, police, disaster response units, and other agencies.

Efforts were directed towards swift and effective rescue operations in collaboration with multiple stakeholders. It includes the Mumbai Fire Brigade, N Ward Office, Mumbai Police, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Despite the swift response, the disaster claimed lives and caused injuries. This highlights the critical need for adherence to safety standards during construction and adverse weather conditions.

The tragic collapse occurred amid the monsoon season, a period fraught with heavy rainfall and potential hazards across India. Mumbai, like many cities in the region, faces annual challenges due to flooding and rain-related incidents during this period.

The local weather department had issued warnings of moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds in Mumbai district on Monday. These adverse conditions led to temporary flight disruptions at Mumbai Airport. Due to this, 15 flights were diverted, and operations were suspended for over an hour.

As the rescue operations continue and the investigation unfolds, authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to safety protocols. The Mumbai rainstorm billboard fall shows how following regulations can prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future. The loss of lives underscores the urgent need for robust safety measures and responsible construction practices.
