According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) summer 2025 projection, temperatures between March and May are expected to be higher than usual. A Mumbai heatwave alert has been issued as temperatures in the city, which has already experienced abnormally high winter temperatures, are predicted to rise by one or two degrees. Sunil Kamble, the director of IMD Mumbai, blamed the spike on climate change, pointing out that the region is also being impacted by a one to two-degree increase in global temperatures.

Mumbai Heatwave Alert

Mumbai’s minimum temperature has not dropped as predicted due to the absence of western winds brought on by the lack of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. Kamble clarified that the persistently high temperatures are due to the absence of westerly winds.

Heatwave Advisory and Health Risks

A heatstroke advisory has been issued by the IMD, warning locals about the dangers of prolonged exposure to high temperatures, particularly for children and elderly individuals. Extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heatstroke, according to health experts. Pregnant women, outdoor workers, and people with pre-existing conditions are among the vulnerable groups most at risk.

Residents are encouraged to reduce sun exposure during peak hours, wear loose cotton clothing, and stay hydrated to lessen the effects of the extreme heat.

Regional Heat Alerts and Weather Variability

A warning of a hotter-than-normal summer, with temperatures predicted to reach 37–39°C, has been issued by the Karnataka Health Department. Maximum temperatures are expected to be above average in coastal districts and northern interior Karnataka, while they will be close to normal in Bengaluru, southern interior Karnataka, and the Malnad region. In coastal Karnataka, hot and humid weather is expected to persist.

Meanwhile, northern India is experiencing a variety of weather conditions. Uttarakhand is anticipated to experience similar weather. Furthermore, a new Western disturbance is expected to affect the western Himalayan region starting on March 9.

With the Mumbai Heatwave Alert in place, experts emphasize the importance of staying informed about temperature fluctuations and taking necessary precautions to minimize health risks.
