The third heat wave currently affecting dozens of states in Mexico may give way to torrential rains, hail, and whirlwinds. Meteorologists have warned that these extreme weather events, Mexico may experience hail and whirlwinds, are expected to occur during the afternoon in the central regions of the country. This warning comes after the capital city, Mexico City, recorded another record-breaking high temperature of 34.7 degrees Celsius (94.5 degrees Fahrenheit) the previous day.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) has reported that eight Mexican states will face intense rains. Areas such as the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Puebla, and Querétaro are particularly at risk, with expected wind gusts and tornadoes between 50 and 70 kilometers (31 to 43 miles) per hour. The possibility of vortices forming in these regions is also high.

At least a dozen cities in Mexico have broken temperature records in recent days. This pressing heat wave has resulted in at least 48 deaths from heat stroke and dehydration over the past two months, according to the Ministry of Health. The intense heat has also caused blackouts in some northern areas and led to the suspension of classes in states like San Luis Potosi, where temperatures have soared to 50 degrees Celsius.

Mexico City, situated in a valley and home to over 10 million people, has broken temperature records three times this summer. The persistent drought is testing the country’s water reservoirs and electrical grid. In Puebla, located about 80 kilometers from the capital, an unusual hailstorm and rainstorm caused significant destruction, including flooding, fallen trees, and wind gusts up to 50 kilometers per hour.

Conagua predicts that the heat wave will continue to dominate the national territory, with maximum temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius expected in Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Guerrero, northern Hidalgo, Jalisco, and Michoacan. Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have warned that the country will experience the highest temperatures in its history over the next 10 to 15 days, which will worsen air pollution due to increased ozone levels.

The severe heat is exacerbating the effects of a widespread drought that already impacts more than 70% of Mexico. According to Conagua, almost a third of the country is experiencing extreme drought conditions, which can be lethal. The heat wave and drought are putting immense pressure on the country’s infrastructure and natural resources.

As Mexico may experience hail and whirlwinds, authorities are urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The combination of high temperatures, the potential for severe storms, and ongoing drought poses significant challenges for the nation.
