Mumbai is Set to host Earthshot 2026, marking a significant milestone in climate action, as the city is set to roll out the red carpet to the world’s best environmental prizes, founded by Prince William of Britain. The event was announced on February 17 as India’s financial capital launched the first-ever Mumbai Climate Week, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to position itself as a leader in the global environmental movement.
Celebrating Scalable Climate Solutions
Each year, the Earthshot Prize has five winners who receive £1 million (about $1.36 million) to scale the solutions that have the most impact on five critical environmental challenges. Prince William, founder and president of the prize, noted India’s role in the world’s environmental forum. “India is one of the world’s most important forces for climate and nature,” he said, noting that what happens in India could be successful elsewhere.
The categories for the award include Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Protect and Restore Nature, Fix Our Climate, and Build a Waste-Free World, each designed to tackle a major front in the planet’s environmental crisis.

India’s Climate Commitment Under the Spotlight
The establishment of the Climate Action Authority of India coincides with the increasing role of India in the global response to climate change, while India faces significant pressure from within its borders in terms of environmental degradation. As the 3rd largest emitter of GHGs in the world and home to some of the world’s largest cities, such as Mumbai, India has faced numerous air quality issues and increasing weather-related events attributed to climate change in recent years.
As a part of its commitment to becoming a net-zero GHG emitter by 2070 and positioning itself as an important player for developing countries in the global climate negotiations process, India has made significant strides in accelerating its efforts to promote sustainable development. As announced during the Mumbai Climate Week, with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and with senior officials from the United Nations in attendance, India plans to continue building momentum to promote sustainable economic development.
